Film Composer Statement

At the core of Bret’s film scoring work is an effort to craft bespoke music-to-picture that feels analog and handmade;  music that belongs to the texture, tone and emotional world of the project. With a background as an upright bassist in jazz and orchestral music, and more than two decades of professional performance experience, Bret brings a distinctly individual and musician-driven approach to composing for film.

“I’m a multi-instrumentalist - double bass, piano, guitar, mandolin, marimba and vibraphone - and my collection of rare instruments, vintage keyboards and esoteric effects often provides unique starting points for a score, or unexpected colours within more familiar cinematic sounds. When I become involved in a project, my goal is always to create something that feels specific to the film: honest, well-crafted and emotionally resonant.”
